“Greetings to the Lithuanian Foundation for the 39th Teacher In-service Camp at Camp Dainava”.  23 teachers, 37 children, and 17 adults learning Lithuanian as a second language attended this year.  We are grateful the the Lithuanian Foundation for its consistent support, without which, these moments would have remained merely a part of someone’s imagination”.  So writes Daiva Navickas,  current Chair of Lithuanian Educational Council of the USA.

Msgr. Edmundas J. Putrimas writes:  “The Lithuanian Foundation’s generous support of the South American community, especially youth activities, is greatly appreciated….Alumni of the Vasario 16 (Feb. 16) High School in Germany heartily re-join their communities, ensuring continuation of Lithuanian traditions.”

Lithuanian Foundation Grants

The Lithuanian Foundation is the primary source of funding for Lithuanian cultural and educational institutions, projects, events and academic scholarships around the world. Since its inception in 1962, the Foundation has disbursed $13,982,900 in grants and scholarships including a $1,316,704 gift to Lithuania's Ministries of Culture and Education, upon the restoration of the country's independence from the Soviet Union.

Over $14 million in grants and scholarships towards Lithuanian endeavors

With the 2007 grant allocations, LF has granted over 13,982,900  in scholarships and grants for Lithuanian endeavors.  The second allocation will put us over the 14 million mark.

Lithuanian Foundation grants support a wide range of Lithuanian projects, programs and institutions, in the areas of culture, education, youth activities, publishing and research.

2007 DISTRIBUTION OF INCOME FOR GRANTS

Every year the Lithuanian Foundation distributes the prior year’s income  to fund the many programs and projects that enable diverse Lithuanian cultural, educational and youth activities in the US and other countries with recognizable Lithuanian expatriate populations.

The Foundation’s Board authorized the distribution of up to $600,000 during 2007.

Elona Vaisniene (LC); Arvydas Tamulis, LF Chairman of the Board; Janina Birute Litviniene (LC); Almis Kuolas (LF); Rasa Juskiene (LC); Algis Saulis, LF Grant Committee Chairman; Vytautas Kamantas (LF); dr. Dainius Skripkauskas (LC); dr. Kazys Ambrozaitis, LF Honorary Committee Chairman.

The Grants Committee composed of  Lithuanian Foundation Directors, Algirdas Saulis (Chair), Vytautas Kamantas, Almis Kuolas, and Jurate Budriene (Alternate) and Lithuanian American Communittee Inc. delegates, Rasa Juskiene, Janina Birute Litviniene, Dainius Skripkauskas, and Elona Vaisniene ( Alternate ), met on June 16, 2007 to consider 173 grant requests totaling $2,000,000. After thoughtful  deliberation, 128 received either full or partial support totaling $413,314.

The Lithuanian Board of Directors,  during their June 26,2007 meeting, approved the grant and scholarship allocations. A second allocation will take place in the fall to distribute the remaining $55,828 for grants.

The major beneficiaries of the grant process were education and youth activities (60%), community affairs (22%), cultural projects (11%), and media  requests (7%).

The greatest beneficiaries of the grant process were our youth.   Major funding was given to Lithuanian heritage schools (16%), other educational institutions (13%), and various youth programs (11%).  Cultural events (12%), Lithuanian media (8%), and community based projects and major Lithuanian centers (16%) also received significant support.  Thanks to the generosity of our donors who have established special funds to provide ongoing support to our students, we were also able to designate 23% of this year’s allocation to scholarships.  Although only 5% came from the general fund, the additional 18% from special donor directed funds helped make the scholarship program significant.
