Lithuanian Foundation Grants Program

The Lithuanian Foundation is dedicated to supporting projects that contribute to the preservation of the Lithuanian heritage in émigré communities. As such, the Foundation concentrates its resources on those projects that demonstrate the potential for far reaching benefits to the Lithuanian community and the community at large.

Funding Priorities

The Foundation invests in new, innovative programs as well as established programs in the émigré community, with an eye to supporting those grant requests that collaborate with other programs to provide a synergistic benefit to on the community.

A more detailed description of funding priorities, restrictions, the review process, application process, recommended steps, and required documentation follows.

Every year the Lithuanian Foundation allocates funds to support a wide range of Lithuanian cultural, educational and youth activities around the world.

For 2010, the Foundation’s Board of Directors approved the distribution of $400,000.

LF Grants Committee

During grant distribution, special attention was given to requests for support of projects for education, improvement of youth camps, and cultural activities attracting younger participants.

Because of an increase of the number of Lithuanian heritage schools, funding for them  was a primary concern and  $70,000 was granted. Student summer internship program in Lithuania received $30,000, youth camp improvement projects received $13,500,  the endowed Lithuanian Studies Chair at University of Illinois – Chicago,  $13,860,  and scholarships, $79,365.

Other major beneficiaries of the grant process were the IX Lithuanian Song Festival in Canada, $16,000, Lithuanian media, $24,774, research and archive centers, $18,000 and the upkeep of Lithuanian community centers, $26,500.
The grants Committee was made up of Algirdas Saulis (chair), Vytas Narutis, Narimantas Udrys, and Arvydas Tamulis (alternate) representing the Lithuanian Foundation and Gintautas Taoras,  Jonas Vainius, Virgus Volertas and Gintaras Cepas (alternate) representing the Lithuanian American Community.

The Committee in session

87 grant applications, requesting $1,131,663 were considered at the May 22, 2010 Grants Committee Meeting.  Of these, 53 requests received support partially or in full for a total grants distribution of $284,710. The total amount distributed for 2010, including scholarships, was $371,971.

There were many worthwhile projects that could not be supported because of lack of funds.

A list of all requests is made available on this website with the hope that interested persons or other foundations would review them and complement the efforts of the Lithuanian Foundation by providing additional financial backing for the projects that lack the necessary support to be implemented.

Cincinnati Lithuanian School „Aitvaras“ sends thanks

On behalf of the students, parents, and teachers of the “Aitvaras” Lithuanian school in Cincinnati, Ohio, we would like to express our appreciation to the Foundation for its moral and financial support.

With Kristina Parrott at the helm as directress, our school opened its doors in the fall of 2007 to two classrooms of students of varying ages and wide ranging language skills.  Today, we operate 3 classrooms which are taught by Kristina Parrott, Raminta Daniulaityte, and Inga Wibberley, as well as a pre-school group “Pipiriukai” which is taught by Jurate Rubikiene.  Along with classes in Lithuanian language and literature, history and geography,  we also have arts and crafts classes led by Indre Rukseniene and Lithuanian folk dance and traditions class taught by Violeta Gwynn.

Thanks to the untiring dedication of teachers and parents, “Aitvaras” students perform at each gathering of the Cincinnati chapter of the Lithuanian American Community.  Their performance is heartfelt as they recite poetry, sing songs, dance folk dances, and put on plays.  With great pride, the entire Cincinnati community celebrates that their school which, though small, has taken such initiative and nurtures the Lithuanian spirit.
